Intensive redevelopment of Access Storage Facility, Sturt's Lock

Context

This is a revision of planning application 2018/3517. The proposed buildings have been scaled back since 2018; the top two storeys have disappeared and the number of residential units has dropped from 150 to 139. However, there will still be 7-storey buildings towering over the lock and the frontage will be highly glazed.

Here is an artist's impression of how Sturt's might look - from an imaginary viewpoint with a wide-angle lens. In reality it would feel much more claustrophobic than this imaginary scene suggests.

Very few people will try to claim that the existing building has much character but it generates no noise and it rarely plunges its neighbours into the shade.

The proposed balconies and public precincts, by contrast, could rob this stretch of the canal of its tranquillity forever.

Why to object

If you live in the line of sight - or within earshot - of this site then you will have probably answered this question already. However, this scheme would affect the wellbeing of all canal users, not just its immediate neighbours.

The proposed cafe and walkways are highly intrusive and legally questionable and they would undermine and interfere with the lock and its second chamber. For images and comments see our web pages showing the cafe, the tree removal and the lock encroachment.

How to object

Please send your objections to Nick.Bovaird@hackney.gov.uk and planning@hackney.gov.uk, quoting reference 2021/0680. Or, if you prefer, you can use the portal on the council website. (There is no official closing date for comments but the sooner you object the sooner the case officer can react).
