Subject: Friends of Regent's Canal - opportunities to have your say

Dear Friends,

I would like to draw your attention to a petition that should benefit all canal and road users on a busy stretch joining Hackney and Islington.

This petition is calling on the two councils to improve human safety at an awkward junction on New North Road; it is so lethal that it is often cited as a non-negotiable reason for commuter cycling on the towpath.

We have been lobbying the authorities about this junction for a number of years, in the interests of giving cyclists safer alternative routes, so I would expect it to attract support from all canal users across London. If you wish to sign this petition then visit and if you wish to understand its context first then visit If, for any reason, you feel that signing this petition is pointless or counter-productive then please let me know because this might influence our future approach to campaigning.

You will notice from the Events page on our website that the Canal and River Trust is holding a user forum on 22nd October. This is a twice-yearly opportunity to submit formal questions to the navigation authority and you can expect written responses if you submit your questions before 1st October. If you are already familiar with the format of these meetings then please send questions directly to Katy Gavan ( Alternatively you can send an e-mail to if you want to discuss anything with fellow users first.

Best wishes,

Ian Shacklock
