Intensification of St Pancras Hospital Site
There are proposals to squeeze a 21-storey tower block into a location that will overlook the canal near Camley Street, along with a smaller block that will displace a green corridor between a park and the canal.
This is part of a redevelopment scheme that has been shared with the local communities on several occasions throughout 2023 but the scale of this tower block was not revealed until the third phase of the consultation at the end of the year.
The tower block will occupy "Plot D" and the designers have pushed it to the north of the site to reduce the visual impact on the southern facade. Presumably they felt that the impact on the canal and its inhabitants was of minor importance.
Two 8-storey blocks will be squeezed onto "Plot C" and this will require the destruction of mature trees and a historic water tower.
Reactions from the local communities
Feedback from the local communities had been generally positive throughout the consultations, but opinions have changed since the scale and positioning of the Plot D was revealed.
The St Pancras Community has launched a petition to tame the proposals, which can be found here.
... and a copy of their comprehensive objections is available here
.Where exactly is this site?
The hospital site can be found between St Pancras Way, Granary Street and St Pancras Gardens. Its postcode is NW1 0PE.
Should we object to these proposals?
From the canal's perspective these proposals are harmful. The tall tower will block natural light in the daytime and will emit light pollution during the evening. The building on Plot C will ruin a green corridor. We will lose several trees along with a historic water tower.
