Subject: Friends of Regent's Canal - special event tomorrow at Angel.

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow afternoon (Saturday 7th June) we will be holding a social/volunteering event at City Road Basin to remove some graffiti. This is part of a programme of activities to brighten up the towpath and suppress crime along City Road Basin.

You are all invited to attend. We will be joined by a film crew who are working for the BBC1 series "Street Patrol UK" that looks at anti-social behaviour and heritage crime. Please meet at the community towpath garden between City Road Lock and Wharf Road N1. Here is our web page that covers tomorrow's event along with related events at the same location:-

While on the subject of anti-social behaviour you might be interested to hear that the Canal and River Trust worked constructively with Hackney Council and the Police to ensure that the unauthorised Canalival event did not take place last weekend. Here are some press reports.

Last year's Canalival was an example of an event that was conceived with good intentions but became hijacked by other parties. It had disastrous consequences because it had no boundaries and it is a shame that we have needed to take a negative stance two years running. It would be a worthwhile exercise tomorrow to start discussing how or whether an event like this might be acceptable if it was adequately controlled. If you have any comments on this then I would like to hear from you.

Best wishes,
