Subject: Friends of Regent's Canal - imminent events and recent news

Dear Friends,

If you are in the Haggerston or de Beauvoir areas of Hackney this evening then please try to support the CRT project known as "Greening the hidden corners" by visiting Ribeira London (N1 5RY) between 5pm and 10:30pm. This is a fundraising event related to the biodiversity and safety of the Regent's Canal. For details visit

On Saturday afternoon there is yet another event related to the canal's greenery. From 12 noon to 3pm the CRT and its partners at Hanover Primary School will be welcoming volunteers to help to transfer soil from a boat to the newly established towpath garden. This is an important milestone in a programme that I hope will turn the towpath at City Road Basin into a destination rather than a thoroughfare and it should make it attractive for a wider range of people. Two weeks ago we held our quarterly public meeting at the London Canal Museum. We discussed volunteering initiatives, the future of our group and mooring issues. Minutes will be published soon. It became clear that we had no appetite for a written constitution but we will need to provide written statements describing our main principles and scope of work. We are looking at different ways of communicating across the group and our new Twitter account will help to disseminate information more effectively. Please contact me if you can offer any constructive criticism of our website and other publications or if you are able to help with any design or technical work behind the scenes.

Best wishes,

Ian Shacklock
