101 Uses for a Dead Dog Basin

The Dead Dog Basin (in Camden Town) has been described as derelict and there are proposals to allow a visitor's platform to encroach onto the water space. This would result in a significant loss of canal infrastructure in the heart of central London.

This basin has a great future without being exploited. We must ensure that it can still function as a wharf or boat yard in future decades. It matters not that this facility has been neglected in recent times; it was purpose built and that purpose has not expired.

What is being proposed?

Here are some illustrations that have appeared in recent public exhibitions. The viewing platform extends from a proposed restuarant.
It would rob waterway users of about a third of the basin while allowing visitors to admire the remaining two thirds.

What can we do to help?

We must identify alternative uses of this basin that give something back to the canal and that offer interesting visitor attractions. For example, painting and maintaining narrowboats or using this facility for loading and unloading deliveries. This is a golden opportunity for the new owners of the market to set an example by reviving the use of the canal instead of contributing towards road usage.
