WALKERS chalked up a new victory this week in the campaign to open up a much-promised mile-long circular towpath at City Road Basin on the Regent's Canal.

It is now possible to walk from Graham Street Park, past Islington Boat Club to City Road Piazza without being impeded by gates - thanks to action by Islington Council.

Local activist Leo Chapman thanked the council for opening the gates to allow walkers greater access but called on it to do the same on the eastern Wharf Road side of the basin, where gates are still locked.

"We've waited 13 years for this circular route, which was promised in the original redevelopment masterplan for the area," Mr Chapman said. "We've still got a long way to go."

He was joined by St Peter's ward councillor Martin Klute and Del Brenner, a member of the Regent's Network and London Waterways Commission.

Mr Brenner said: "Developers have already started building the monstrous 36-storey tower block nearby.

"The least the council can do now is to ensure the towpath is fully open so that visitors can enjoy the facility."
