Closure of Hampstead Road Locks

On 13th May 2025 both chambers at Hampstead Road Lock were closed to boat traffic. Lock 1B had already been out of action for about five years, with no action plan for its revival, and the surviving chamber (Lock 1A) was closed without warning on 13th May.

Navigation closed for essential gate repair works Reactive team have been mobilised to set up and undertake works to address a significant water loss issue. Further updates to follow.

Please be advised that the Camden Locks closure will remain in place until further notice.

Hampstead Road 1a has a more severe failure than initially thought and will now require require a dewatered lock head to rectify.

We are looking at all options to rectify and will provide a further update on Friday morning.

Closure will still cover the following locks in Camden: RE-004-017 - Lock 1a & 1b - Hampstead Road Lock RE-004-021 - Lock 2 - Hawley Lock RE-004-024 - Lock 3 - Kentish Town Lock

Camden Locks will remain closed. We have the repair works and contractors being mobilised and will have a plan of works in place early next week.

The Closure will still cover the following locks in Camden:

* RE-004-017 - Lock 1a & 1b - Hampstead Road Lock
* RE-004-021 - Lock 2 - Hawley Lock
* RE-004-024 - Lock 3 - Kentish Town Lock

Update A safe system of works to undertake repair is in place. Plant, craft, materials, equipment and other resources have been secured. Work is expected to start work on site Thursday when all resources are on site.

Hampstead Road - Lock 1b will be operational from today at 1pm. The closure on Kentish Town and Hawley locks will also be removed.

Craft are to use the lock singly, and ensure both gates are open before moving in/out of the lock. Please note that the top gates are only operating from one paddle (land side) so operation is slow, please be patient.

Hampstead Road - Lock 1a remains closed.

Please note that a full closure for ALL Camden Locks, will re-commence at 16:00 on Wednesday 21/05/2025 to allow for emergency repair works to Hampstead Road Lock 1a.

We will advise when the locks will be available for navigation as soon as practicable.

We are delighted to report that the Camden locks are now open.

The Hampstead Road lock currently available for operational use is Lock 1b.

This is the only remaining dual-chamber lock on the Regent's Canal. Sadly the chamber on the left (Lock 1B) has been closed to boat traffic in recent years and the one on the right (Lock 1A) has been leaking water for many months. These photos were taken on 3rd May, ten days before the lock was put out of action.
